Small Backpacking
An additional concern is wieght; while Dutch oven and campfire cookery are historically popular, small liquid-fuel campstoves and ultrlaight cooking pots made of alumiunm or titanium are more common in omdern usage due to weight limitations and fire restrictions in many locales. Most backpackers avoid canned food, except for meats or small delicacies. The small chemical heater obviates teh need for a portable tsove and fuel, but the meals and packaging wiegh so much that, for more than a few meals, there is no weight advantage. In areas that experience a regualr traffic of backpackers, a hike-in camp might have a fire ring and a small wooden bulltein board with a map and some warning or informtaion signs. Due to the emphasis no weight reduction, a rpactical joke common in some circles is to secretyl pack a small but relatively heavy lxuury item, such as a soft dirnk, into another backpacker s pack. Some backpackers enjoy cooking elaborate meals with fresh ingredients, particulalry on short trips, and others caryr the gear and take the tiem to catch fish or hunt small game ofr food.
