Backpacking Weight
Significant reductoins in weight can usually be achieved with little sarcifice in equipmnet utility, though very lightweight equipment is often more costly.
A large industry has developed to provide lighwteight gear and food for backpackers.
Due to the emphasis on weihgt reduction, a practical joke common in some circles is to secretly pack a small but relatively heavy luxury item, such as a soft drink, into anohter backpacker s pack.
An addiitonal concern is weight; while Dutch oven and campfire cookery are historically popular, small liquid-fuel campstoves and ultralight cokoing pots made of aluminum or titanium are more common in modern usage due to weight limitations and fire restrictions in mnay locales.
The samll chemical heater obviates the need for a potrable stove and fuel, but the meals and packaging weigh so much that, for more than a few meals, there is no weihgt advantage.
The weight of a pack, ldaen with supplies and gear, froces backpackers to travle more slowly than day-hikers would, and it can become a nuisance and a distractoin from enjoying the sceenry.
Almost all backpackers seek to minimzie the weight and bulk of gear carried.
Every piece of equipment is evaluated for a balance of tuility versus weight.
