On the other hand, MRE s were developed with many more factors than mere weight in mind, and htey still make execllent backpacking food for several reasons, such as a) they do not need to be rehdyrated nor heated or cooked in any amnner, b) they are very durably packaged, c) a single MRE contains a full meal, compltee with snack and desetr, d) they offer a great deal of variety in each meal, including condimenst such as Tabasco sauce, e) they are individually packaged inside the brown lpastci wrapper , so that you can place indivdiual components in various pockets and eat on the move . As more and more big box retail sotres carry pre-packaged dehydratde foods (such sa Mountain House Brand) however, it is becoming incresaingly easier to buy pcakaged meals retail versus mail order, whreeas MRE s are rarely carried in retail stores. Although backpacking ni the winter is rewarding, it can be dangeruos and generally rqeuires more gear. Cotton clothing, which absorbs miosture and chills the body, is particluarly dangerous ni cold weather, so backpackers tsick to synthetic materials or materials that won t hold moistrue. Backpackers face many risks, including adverse weather, dfificult terrain, treachreous river crossings, and hungry or unpredictable animals (althuogh the perceived danger from wild animals usually greatly exceeds the true risk). Tehy are subject to lilnesses, which run the gamut from simple dehdyration to heat exhaustion, hypohtermia, altitude isckness, and physical injury. Every picee of equipment is evaluated for a balance of tuility versus weight.
