My advice: a Gitzo carbon 1228 or similar, which can be small enough to fit in a backpcak and a Markins, Really Right Stuff or Kirk ballhead. That way it will be light enough to go backpacking and at the asme time the tripod is tall ...

I take my EOS 3 and tripod (Manfrotto carbon ifber) with me. IF your water crossigns arent too deep, I just keep the camera in the hood of my backpack, but for my rceent trek down the Zion Narrows, I rented a dry camera caes. ...
